When His offering is not familiar
And I fear to miss or fail
When I’m confronted by failure
And I’m scared of seeming a fool
Because I dread to risk my trust
Or switch my want with His will
Easy yoke becomes a weight
Till I yield to Him my all.
When His timing flips my chart
And I dread to admit my qualm
When He bids me come to light
While I’d rather hide and dream
When I feel safer with the known
Unwilling to experiment with change
Life becomes a struggle till I learn
On Him, my hope, to hinge.
How do you sit back and sleep
When doubts storm your boat?
How do you walk upon the sea
When waves wrench your feet?
Yet, He isn’t pleased without faith
Or trust devoid of obedience
Taking His hand today, I step out
Till He brings me to the place of rest.
When we have some idea of the path that Abba is leading us, we quickly summon courage and follow. The journey is exciting when we know where we are headed. When our destination is known, the route is certain and arrival is guaranteed, we are excited to jump into the wagon and go.
On the other hand, when it is an usual path that we haven’t been before, doubt rears its ugly head and we long to run and hide instead of taking a risk that isn’t guaranteed. Fear drives our feet and we begin to falter as we wonder, and we wander rather than follow the faithful Guide. We don’t want to fail or lose face and that fear steals the courage that joy breeds and keeps us from enjoying adventures that have the potential to enrich our lives.
Yet, when we acknowledge our fears and turn them over to God, He takes His rightful place as the Shepherd of our souls. As we turn our back to fear and our face to His Word, we find strength for the journey ahead. As we hearken to His call, marrying obedience to our trust in the faithful God who never fails, the oil of our trust will eliminate the frictions of doubts and fears. Then we are released to follow with willingness, and possibly excitement, from one step to another as we discover new paths, gain wisdom, and enjoy higher life with Him.
Today as He reaches for your heart, be not afraid to surrender. As He calls to the unfamiliar, know that all God expects is for you to trust and obey. You don’t need to know the end from the beginning, God already knows. All you need is His grace and guidance for today, tomorrow will take care of itself. Blessings as you trust and obey.
Glory!
