O Grace, beautiful grace!
The foundation of my stand
The guard that guides my feet
The shield that covers my soul
The stamp that sets me apart
O Grace, beautiful Grace
That makes me more than I can ever be!
That gives me more than I can ever ask!
I have this tendency to save my best for the last. And guess what? When I think it’s time to whip it up and dazzle, show time is past and it’s another phase. Something that would have proven phenomenal if used, turns stale while waiting on the shelf; waiting for a time that just passed it by. Something that would have been appreciated, applauded, even celebrated if used, shows up unnoticed, because something else has taken the stage and its time is past, its purpose missed, served by another that may not be comparable or as good but took the stage anyway because it was available and tenable. The not so goods excel because they are available and reachable while the bests are waiting for better times.
We want to save our best for the last but who said life works that way? We tell ourselves better times are coming but history continues to prove that times don’t get better: people do if they walk with time – not when they wait for time that waits for no one. In wait for a better time, we save what is meant to be used. And its absence, another perhaps not even as good, rises up to fill that vacancy and in the process the available “Not so good” emerges an incomparable replacement for the best that was saved for some better time that passed while it waited.
It is okay to save but what good is a savings that depreciates with time? Wisdom teaches us sensitivity: that to everything there is a time. There is a time to save and a time to spend. When it comes to life: every moment is for spending: it is God’s to save. God gave us life to spend not save it. Time is not for us to save but to use as well. Treasures appreciate when they are used, not saved.
Every day, God lavishes upon us His grace. He is not a stingy Father so He gives us abundantly, sufficient for the day. It makes no sense to save some grace today so we can add it to tomorrow’s portion. God’s grace is just enough for the day. Every new day comes with sufficient grace, we can’t add to it, we can’t save it: every unused grace goes with the day because each new day comes with its own measure of grace to meet the unique challenges of that day.
What grace has taught me is to take my life off the shelf and live. Not because of fear of losing it but because life has been given for living, assigned for use not for keeps. Every day, grace brings opportunities our ways, don’t let them walk away because you are waiting for some “opportune” time. Every moment is unique, expires, and has the ability to build up to that opportune time when it is judiciously utilized. Don’t let any moment slip by. It’s time to live like there is no tomorrow; not reckless but making the most of every chance we get.
