When mortal comes
Male or female, old or young
Standing, sitting, or kneeling
Clothed or naked, it doesn’t matter
When a man approaches as he is
With a heart that’s heavy or happy
In moods that could be fun or pain
Even in tears, it doesn’t matter
When a woman looks up or down
Outward or inward, aware or uncertain
Full of faith or fear, singing or wailing
Smart or silly, it doesn’t matter
When vulnerable engages Divine
With a voice that is so glad and loud
Or so timid and low it can’t be heard
In sober silence or weepy whispers, it doesn’t matter
When fallible falls into the Infallible
And issues bugging little heart
Directly connect to Mighty Ears
Coherent or cryptic, that’s prayer, it does matter
Be it a sigh or a sign
Broken groans, speechless stare
In stillness, squirming or aching
Every dot or thought beamed on God, does matter
Prayer is to constantly suck the milk
Of His presence, and find contentment
And gratitude in the nutrition it supplies
And whatever we think we lack, it doesn’t matter.
Be it me standing in for you
Or earnestly beseeching for myself
Emmanuel means access anytime, anywhere
Anyhow: despite the size of faith, prayer matters
Do you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall but those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40: 28-31.
According to the good Book, we ought to always pray and not faint. Not pray according to a frustrating regime or in a discouraging order that makes us dread such an enriching exercise. Each of us must learn to find what works best for us as we make the most of God’s ever abiding presence in us. The practice of His presence means that we do not limit our communications to only a time and space. Instead, we take it everywhere we go, in everything we do so that it becomes a part of us. Wherever you are, whatever your experiences, may you enjoy the privilege and the benefits of having a direct line that connects straight to the heart and ears of the Sovereign God, ruler of all that rules and are ruled, amen.
