I heard him say
“He called me to riches”
I heard her ask
“If He called this way
Why is life so hard?”
I heard him claim
“He called me the head
The tail I cannot abide.”
Another quoted
“He called me the first
Any less, I cannot accept.”
And to you I ask
To who were you called?
We are all caught up in this intensely competitive atmosphere where everyone is trying to be and do better than everyone else. We feel like failures if we don’t think we are measuring up. We feel disappointed, we get discouraged and depressed because we are not getting what we are seeking or we are not getting in the measure we are seeking. At the end of the day, some of us blame God for not helping us meet up, for not doing for us what we couldn’t do for ourselves and our loved ones. We blame God for a world gone awry and we blame Him for letting things fall apart in our lives. But who said you are a failure?
The God who calls us speaks words of comfort, strength and encouragement to keep us pushing until we take hold of that for which He took hold of us. But many of us are so distracted we do not seek what we have been called to. For some of us, home is our calling but offices are more appealing. Some of us are called beside a loved one whose health is failing but we want to be out there like everyone else, living “the dream.” Some of us are called to the mountains but the valleys seem less intimidating than the rugged clefts and cliffs we must brace. Unfortunately, the grass appears attractive across from our dry, brown, repelling lawn.
If everyone of us is the head, who will be the tail? If we are all first at the same time, who will take the last? In our striving we forget that God has designed life in seasons: sometimes we are head and some others, we are tail and it is all okay if that is where we have to be for the time. If God allowed us to get there, He’s got something right there for us that we cannot find any other place no matter how high. The grace of God greases us through the stresses of where God has called us so that we don’t wear and tear like the rest of the world do.
I like to be the head, the first, the best but I have learned from my walk with God that my business is not to make the head, the first and the best my priority. We miss it when we make the means the end and vice versa. Our priority should always be God: His will, His way. When we let God lead us in His will, in His way, He makes all things beautiful in His time. Yes, we can be the best or the worst, we can be the first or the last, we can be the head or the tail but guess what? Those are not what we are called to. We are called to God, every other is just a part of the process that He uses to transform us into the fullness of Him who is head over all. Not the head, not the first, and not the best: God is our ultimate goal.
