When we follow the expert Guide
Life flows despite bumps and glides
When we choose to walk in light
We stumble not though roads are rough
Confidence comes easier when we know
But uncertainties, how so unnerving!
When times grow dim and perplexing
And the Guide feels nowhere in sight
Fear will arise and worries thrive:
That is when to be still and know.
If you are accustomed to following an expert Guide, observers see you as a champion because to them, you appear in control. You know where you’re going. You know what you’re doing. You’re not fumbling and bumbling like the majority. And though everybody may think you are on top of your game, you know your secret: simple obedience of one who knows not, to the directives of the One who knows it all.
For me, I need to know where something is going before I even start because I want to as objectively as possible, evaluate it and determine that it is where I want to go, and that I am okay with the terms and conditions of the route of travel. I need to know available options. I need to have as much details as possible, early enough to be able to make an informed decision. Otherwise, I’m more prone to say no without thinking than to take a blind risk. Except God is leading.
If God is leading, I don’t need to know the end from the beginning though my curiosity itches for just that! I have learned over the years to follow God. I actually follow Him better blindly than with my eyes open because then I may see things I shouldn’t and like Peter, get distracted by the waves and begin to waver. Following God, I am at peace and at the peak of confidence and it doesn’t matter where it ends. All that matters is that He is in it with me: I’ll be fine.
If you are accustomed to following God, the feeling of being left to yourself can be fearfully intimidating. What do I do? Where do I start? How do I proceed? The feeling of vulnerability on unfamiliar territories doesn’t make it any easier. People respond in different ways. Some just run out and keep going, not knowing where they are headed or the dangers along the way. Some hide away and tortuously worship gods of worries and fears that yields no good.
I learned in my walk with God that the best thing to do when you don’t know what to do, is to wait for the faithful Guide who has promised never to leave nor forsake us. He is always there even when we don’t seem to see Him. He is always speaking and working all things together for our good though we see no signs to confirm that. Patience is a priceless virtue for a believer because without patience, it is impossible to walk with God.
