They sit on the fence, bumbling about
Scrambling for whatever life flings their way.
Greed is their mother, anger their brother
They curse and fight and kill for crumbs
They lie and cheat and steal for a sip.
To their appetite, there is no barrier
Their god in their belly, their master –
Their pockets. Well dressed, they appear
Nobel, yet nothing is gallant in their ways.
How did man fall to such disgrace? How
Can man live, from day to day, in filth?
Food For Thought: Values vary for different folks. What repulses one may be the very thing that turns on another. What is unacceptable to one may be the aspiration of another. Life depends on countless factors that influence our tastes and choices. Yet even in close proximity and for very similar circumstances, preferences vary still. Nevertheless there is one universal equalizer of all men irrespective of the differences in race, age, gender, level of education, possessions and positions: the Word of God. The Word of God is not selective and makes no allowances for all the labels we exploit to define ourselves and limit interactions. We live in times when tensions are high: the majority of us want to be seen as color blind and open yet our lifestyles are continuously segregating. We see what makes us different more than we see what makes us one. Yet, despite our differences, God’s Word comes across to everyone the same. And the goal remains same irrespective of who we are and where we are from: to make us pleasing and acceptable to God. To make us like Christ. To transform us into the very image of the One of whom we were originally created. And the more like God we are, the more fulfilled life will be.
Scripture: Now godliness with contentment is great gain. 1 Timothy 6: 6.
Prayer: Dear Lord, preserve me from the devastations of lust and greed: may I follow You in the narrow and holy way, striving higher to be more and more like You, amen.
