Every child is precious
Every life is precious
In the sight of God
May it be so in the hearts of men.
It was a very difficult time for the Israelites in Egypt. As if their enslavement was not hard enough, Pharaoh had released another decree to kill every male child on delivery. Only God knows how many mothers’ hearts were broken as they watched their sons snatched and cast into the river. How many women felt helpless in the face a seeming hopeless situation? But not Jochebed.
She must have hidden her pregnancy because nobody came to her door demanding she surrendered Moses when he was born. Bible said, she noticed he was such a beautiful child she made the choice to not let him suffer the fatal fate of many others. She hid him and nursed him for three months, all the while thinking what her next steps will be.
Eventually, a plan came up; the baby was going to the river but not as Pharaoh commanded. He was going to the river to live, not to die. He was going to the river to be saved, not drowned. And nobody was taking her child to the dreaded river that has consumed many: she would take him there herself. Safely, she tucked the baby who could no longer be hidden under her roof in an ark of bulrushes, which had been rubbed with asphalt and pitch to prevent it dumping the child in the river. She took the little one and his big sister to the river but instead of casting him in there to die as decreed, she laid him in the reeds by the bank of the river, left his sister to watch out for the child from a distance, and went home to await the outcome of the matter.
The faith of this mother in God, and her efforts to save her son did not go in vain. God sent the daughter of the very man who commanded the killing to find him. God used the daughter of Pharaoh to pay the child’ s mother to raise him. In a land where sons died as they were birthed, the daring faith of one mother spared one who turned out a mighty man before God and men. Often, this woman’s name is not mentioned but history is there to prove that God is able to take our little steps of faith, especially taken in times of adversity, and turn them into miracles that beat the enemy’s plans. Pharaoh’s plan was to decimate Israel but God used his resources, to raise under his roofs, the one that would save the very people destined for destruction.
It is true that times are tough, things are difficult, and a lot of things going on in our society does not support or encourage a life of faith. In fact, their goal is to spread hopelessness because it leaves people feeling helpless and at the mercy of tyrants. But those who know their God shall be strong and do exploits. Jochebed most likely did not feel strong, may not have counted her faith extraordinary, and definitely did not set out to do exploit that changed not only the history of Israel and Egypt, but of the whole world. Yet God used her simple acts of faith to accomplish His will even in the most trying of time.
Are you afraid of the future? Are you concerned for your children? Fear profits nothing but faith paves a way where there appears to be none so that God can reach us and help us. Don’t let fear push you to drown what is meant to be saved. Look to God despite the fears. Trust God in spite of your fears. And walk your faith, one step at the time. God will meet you where you need Him most.
