Life is like an ocean, coming
And going, here and there
Carrying all sorts along, bearing
Me to places I like and dread and hate.
Sometimes, like sand by the ocean
Mounting pressure on every side
Pushing me deeper, a sinking ship.
Leaving me alarmed, afraid, unsure
Of what to chase and what to ignore.
The more I fight, the deeper I sink
The more desperate I am; flailing
Clutching, fighting all in sight
But when I let go and let God
He ushers in peace that stills my soul
My thrashing ends though war besets
I cease to clutch but hang on Him
I know the rest He breeds in storms.
Food For Thought: Rest is not earned by hard work. It is not a product of smart ideas. And it is not acquired as a result of our possessions and positions in life. Rest is not something that happens after retirement. It is not gotten or entered into when everything turns all right because the more we wait for that time, the clearer it dawns that there is never going to be such a time. Rest is a gift from God upon those who are learning to trust and obey Him. Irrespective of levels or whatever distinctions we may choose, rest is God’s gift to all who believe in Him enough to get up every day He calls and follow in the way He has called. Not counting costs and consequences, not letting uncertainties shake their trust in God, not allowing their fears dictate their obedience to Him. We enter God’s rest when we take God by His Word and in obedience find contentment therein. That is why people living in “troubled zones” have enough peace to comfort those in “safe areas” when a little shaking pushes them to the edge. It is not about location and acquisition: the rest of God is a free gift available to all but enjoyed by choice, by those who consciously and conscientiously choose to trust and obey God and His Word no matter what. Rest is the presence of God within and around us, protecting, preserving, restoring, refreshing, no matter what, when and where.
Scripture: And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33: 14.
Prayer: Dear Lord, when troubles are trampling about, messing with men and their faith, keep me still in Your rest, amen.
