Make me that pilgrim who is mindful
Of the purpose of every gift
Make me that pilgrim who is intent
On accomplishing the mission
Make me that pilgrim who is content
With supplies bequeathed
Make me that pilgrim who makes
Every moment count for the vision
Make me that pilgrim who will not
Sell my birthright for a plate of porridge
Make me that pilgrim who does not
Devote my heart to fading fancies
Make me that pilgrim who is wary
Of the snares of times and things
Make me that pilgrim who is focused
On finishing well and making it home
Make me that pilgrim who will be told
“Welcome home O faithful servant.”
Food For Thought: Irrespective of our varying roles and responsibilities, not discounting the labels and titles we bear, we are all messengers: we are servants of the Most High. From the greatest to the least of us: we are all the same: messengers of God. Ignore the fact that many leaders have turned lords like the world Jesus taught us not to emulate. It doesn’t change the truth that leadership is for service. It takes having the heart of a servant to earn the place of leadership and it takes leading with the heart of a servant to stand out as an exemplary leader. Servants are leaders and leaders are servant. Leaders are called, servants are sent, all for the purpose of the Master but many today have called and sent themselves. Any wonder they lack the key ingredients of successful leadership? They have little regard for the One they claim to serve. They despise and deride those they lead. Their ideas must not be challenged, their orders not questioned. They don’t win the respect of their followers; they take it by force. Intimidation is their tool, harassment their style and when they try too hard, they adopt false humility. We did not learn such from Christ. He was Master, yet He stooped to wash the feet of those who honored Him as their Leader. He had no titles, clamored for nothing, and demanded no special treatment. What does a servant desire the most? Nothing else and nothing less than what Christ sought most: to please His Father through service to everyone that came His way. May we be servants in truth and in deed.
Scripture: Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Mark 1: 11.
Prayer: Dear Lord, may pleasing You and fulfilling Your purpose for my life rise above every other priority competing for my attention, amen.
