In Eden, I was king, going and coming
Living lavish, in luxury I didn’t create
Enjoying splendor I didn’t attain.
I lived in the care of Abba, flourished
Under the shadow of my Maker.
All He sought, for all He gave
All He asked of me: obedience
And obedience I pledged, my loyalty
Affirmed, in truth and indeed, and I did
Until the day curiosity lured me out
Ignorance prodded, promising much more
Greed set a bait I couldn’t see past
Until
I was trapped by my desires:
I took the gifts for granted
I went seeking more and lost it all.
I lost the gifts,  I lost the Giver
And I lost me along the way.

Food For Thought: I guess it is natural for us to want more. It is encouraged if what we seek is good. The desire for more is however not limited to the good. Wanting more of even the good becomes a problem if it lacks restraint. For want of more good, some will abase themselves and others. The good Book says that godliness with contentment is huge advantage. To be content with what we have does not mean that we cease to expect and to desire. Being content implies that we are grateful for what we have and for where we are. It means we may nurture the desire to progress beyond where we are but we are not anxious about it. Our desires do not control or consume us. We are in charge and it is being managed accordingly. When gratitude drives our quest for more, we are at peace and content but when that flight is boarded in ingratitude, we run the risk of not only losing what we have but also of getting lost in the process. May our aspirations and expectations be guided by God, His Word, and His will for our lives.

Scripture: Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13: 5.

Prayer: Dear Lord, deception comes promising much more than I have, and often in haste I drop what I have for the promised “Much More” only to lose it all: deliver me from greed O God and guide me in the path of contentment, amen.
