I have gone my ways, walked in boots of those
I sought to please, yet ever so often I ponder
“Why is sameness so persistent, change so elusive?”
Hope floundered as I wondered until He lifted
The veil. I began to see: seeing changes everywhere
Seeing changes every day, in every moment.
Every day comes with countless changes;
Some obscure, some outstanding, but we are
Too busy to look, too distracted to notice,
Too lost in our quest to pause and appreciate
Changes exploding in the quietness and chaos.
Haste deprives what’s left after ignorance robs
But those paying attention stumble into miracles
Disguised by distresses, stalking everywhere
In the routines of every day’s “As usual.”
Unique discoveries whose recoveries affirm
That change is neither far nor rare
That change is every day and every day is change.
Awake, look with care upon despised routines:
Change awaits those who are willing to change.
Food for Thought: I am yet to meet anyone who does not itch for change every once in a while. Some of us are very strange breed; easily bored by routine, ever itching for varieties, yet not very receptive to change. Many of us are comfortable with the usual until we get sick of it and our longing for change matures into full blown desperation: however it comes so long as it spells different from our routines. Funny enough, those seasons that I have longed for change are the times when it appears that things begin to turn upside down as ‘usual’ gives way to chaos. Confusions arise, distractions abound and it is so easy to get frustrated with all the swirling and grinding going on around. Through these though I am learning, that change happens whether we are aware, appreciative or not. It is in going to bed when it is dark and waking up hours later to delightful rays of rising sun. It doesn’t happen only while we sleep. Every day we wake up to a new day is a promise of countless changes which we often miss. Life often keeps us awake through the churns of changes. Being conscious through the lengthy and weighty shades and shadows of change, we worry and in our hurry, make the wrong moves, then we panic at disheartening results, grow faint, lose focus and miss our way. It feels like night will never end, like day will never break. Yet unknown to the unobservant, despite the gloom we may feel when time feels still, every moment of darkness is a miracle that draws us closer to dawn. Every moment the hand of the clock ticks, speaks change to what was, to what is, and to what can become. Take no time for granted, every moment is pregnant with a promise of change.
Scripture: Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19
Prayer: Dear Lord, keep me still through the turmoil of life, guided through darkness, watchful in chaos, paying attention to the demands of every moment, to feed it right and not miss the change I hope for, amen.
