Like harvest and seedtime
So good and tough times
Take their turns in every life
Yet every day I learn:
It doesn’t take a lot
To make a difference in our call.
Faithful God will always do
What only He can do
Grace abounds for us to do
That to which we are called
And it doesn’t really take a lot
To make a difference in our call.
Not people or circumstances
Not possessions or positions
Not qualifications and experiences
And not time past or future
Will prove us winners or losers
But how we stand today in our call.
A little thought, a little care
A little step to stir a cheer
A little hand lent here and there
Out of the much we were given
Can make a huge difference
In lives to whom we’re sent.
I was supposed to be wrapping up articles for the year, one more to go and nothing was forthcoming. I decided to take a walk, enjoy the outdoors for a while and see what comes. One hour and done but nothing. As I turned into the last road that will mark my terminal, I noticed a lady walking on the other side of the road stop abruptly, then as fast, she ran across toward me and I recognized her. I was readying for a big hug but she held me and went down on her knees, thanking profusely.
You would think I bought her a new car or something spectacular. It was only a little gift – one of the watches that the watch repairer had fixed for me. I had more than I was actually using. In fact, I have this terrible habit of using any piece of item I like, ignoring the rest until the favorite dies so thoroughly that I can’t manage it anymore, then I move on to another. This particular watch had lain there unused for a while before I realized it wasn’t functioning anymore. It was pricey to fix and I was stuck on another favorite that was already worn out, which I wasn’t ready to change yet. I had a couple still and I noticed this particular lady had none. I didn’t want to let it lie around doing nothing so I decided she needed it more than I did. I left it with the repairer to pass it on for me.
The repairer probably couldn’t believe his ears because when I was passing, he called to remind me my watch was still with him. I stated that I wanted the lady to have it. I guess he wasn’t sure he heard me well. Since the gift, we had not seen until that day and guess what? She was wearing it, along with a real special dress, grinning from ear to ear. It made my day to see her so happy. It felt great to see her wearing something that had been lying around for a long time. In her hand, it was worth more than it cost to buy, it was worth more than it cost to fix, it was way worth more than what it cost to give it away. Although the kneeling and excitement was somewhat embarrassing out in the streets with eyes on us but I could sense that my little gift had made a big difference in her beautiful heart.
It doesn’t really take that much to touch someone’s life you know. As we get into the final months of the year, may we be sensitive to share the little things in our hands that can make great difference in the lives of others. May God open doors for others to share their little gifts that would make that big difference in our own lives. And keep an open heart, God could still have some last month and last minute surprises for some of us. Blessings.
Glory!
