I have been very patient
Diligently waiting for God
And then He showed up
And shocked me: I said
“So what now Abba,
I’ve been
Waiting all year for you?”
He responded, “Whenever
You’re ready child, I’ve been
Waiting all the while for you.”

There are times we do not want to do what needs to be done and “Waiting on God,” appears a convenient cover for not doing what we ought, as we try to figure out what we can do about what we don’t want to do. Waiting on God can become an excuse for avoiding what we are afraid to face or for escaping what we don’t want to confront. “I’m waiting on God,” sounds more plausible than “I’m doing nothing.”

Sometimes, waiting on God is an attempt at looking to God to move something we cannot move on our own. We have done all we know to do, and find ourselves at the point where we don’t know what next. Thus we pause, waiting for direction for next steps. Sometimes we are uncertain about which way to go so we wait for confirmation. And some others we know but we don’t like what we are supposed to be about so we wait in hope that something will happen and change our course of action.

We are all at different points in our journey and waiting will carry varying meanings to different people. There is nothing wrong with waiting when we are uncertain or when we’ve done all we know and don’t know what else to do. Then we look to God to point the way: to lead so we can follow. However I also learned, that a lot of the times we spend thinking we are waiting for God to do something, God is actually waiting for us to do our own part. Until we do what we should, God will not jump the process. He will wait for us.

What this taught me is to use the time of waiting to revaluate my life and walk so that I am not stalling myself thinking God is keeping me waiting. What was the last thing God gave me and what did I do about it? Oftentimes, until our obedience is tendered toward the last instruction, God will wait on us. It is shocking to think all I need to move to the next level is a Word from God only to realize after waiting so long that what I truly needed was to apply obedience to what I was asked to do. And until that obedience is meted, God is waiting for us. While we are thinking that God is holding us back, we are actually the ones holding ourselves down. May God help us to see clearly where we are, to recall the forgotten and the discarded, to address the needful, and after our all is done, to be patient with God, with whom nothing is impossible. Amen.
