Dreams and desires and expectations
Can grow wings without limitations
Plans on what to do and how to roll
Mount from here to there and everywhere
News and events, people and things, keep
Coming and going, leaving us not the same, yet
Through the thick and thin of life’s adventures
Faith will keep us. Faith will lead us home.
The times we live in are uncertain, events unsettling, fueled by news of gloom and doom that leave us fearful of the future we should look forward to. In fact, it appears current trends are targeted at leaving us more fearful of the unknown that we can barely enjoy the known, and desperate to escape those fears (that are more imaginations than reality) by any means possible. The problem is not just that fear diminishes the quality of our lives, desperation can drive one to crazy ends that would leave us shell-shocked after it’s all said and done. In times like this, more than ever before: we need faith to survive.
Not faith in the times and things available or are yet to be made. Not faith in people who seem to be making it well through the challenges that are crippling others. Not faith in any place or power that was or is or still will be. Like David declared in Psalm 121, we are living in days when looking to the high and mighty will bring no relief from the things we dread…, until we look in the mirror of truth and acknowledge what has always been there, waiting for us all this while: that our hep comes from God! Not from anyone or anything no matter how lauded.
Faith is not what we find in the absence of fear but what will bring us to the point of choosing to trust God despite our fears. Faith in the face of surmounting fears! It is a choice that nobody but us will have to make on our own, for ourselves and on behalf of our loved ones. The choice to believe that God was, that God is, and that God will always be good and faithful to His Word and promises to us, irrespective of how things turn out for us. The choice to believe that He will work all things together for our good no matter how the outcomes appear to our understanding. The choice to believe that God has never failed and will not fail in our case no matter how things work or don’t.
God is the One that keeps us well and He uses the instrument of faith to navigate us through all that come our way to where He needs us to be. He is the One who saves us. The One who helps us. The One who protects and preserves us from the strikes of life. And this God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above and beyond all that we can ever imagine or ask. Maybe not in the way we think or expect but in the way that He knows is best for us. And faith, is that choice to accept whatever He allows knowing that His goodness will shine through even when it seems so dark we can barely see what hit us. Faith is that choice that enables us to say, “Even though He slays me, yet I will keep believing, I will keep trusting, I will not look back, I will not give Him up, and I will not give up on Him.” May God help us live this faith in truth and in deed. Amen.
