Dreaming  tomorrow, we miss today
Longing for what is not, we forget what is
Reaching for unknown, the known eludes:
We must be present to appreciate every present.

Valentine Day was always like every other day to me until this past one. Despite earlier plan for special treats, that day met me at crossroads. I had to look in the mirror and tell myself some hard truths that left me feeling down. It was further complicated by the fact that I had planned to go for a walk with Gus without realizing what day it was and had gotten no response to my message for us to reschedule. Feeling discouraged, I decided to just chill and warm up leftovers for supper when his response came in confirming he was on his way anyway.

At this point, I was starving and it was very cold outdoors so I ran downstairs when the doorbell rang to tell him I would rather go grab a quick bite than walk and there was Audrey by the door with this “I got you” smile plastered all across her face. Gus followed her in, carrying a special supper – my favorite super sassy wings, rice, salad, and yummy desert! I didn’t only have great friends over with a sumptuous dinner, Audrey got me a real fancy tea case while Gus brought fishes freshly caught that morning. Thus a day that started funny ended on a very happy note.

Life doesn’t always go the way we want but more than what we wish, God knows how best to meet our needs. In more astounding ways than we can imagine, God shows His unfailing love and mindfulness toward us. More than what and those we can’t have, He uses those we probably aren’t even counting on to do what we can’t do for ourselves. Their willingness to share this special day I had expected them to just enjoy together made my own day and gave my heart the lift it needed to spring past my disappointment and errors, to where I should be.

It was such a reminder that more than all we are wishing for, God has surrounded us with what we truly need. He is not obliged to meet our expectations. Yet, over and above all we are asking for, God has surrounded us with more than enough to fill essential gaps. Maybe not how and when we want but in ways that truly brings us true joy and gains Him glory. And for as long as we look to Him above all else, God will continue to demonstrate that He is well able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above and beyond our dreams and desires.
